Any type of stain repellant should be tested before use. Typically two things are observed when applied, change in color or dye stability and change of hand (feel). I would probably recommend using solvent-based fluorochemical blend with co-polymers for the best penetration and stain protection. Keep in mind, stain repellants will come off within several washings and dry cleaning will completely remove it.
