My name is Alec Houle. I began cleaning carpets and upholstery in 1962, long before carpet cleaning became the large industry it is today. Over the years I’ve watched fibers change, cleaning methods evolve, and new equipment come and go. But one thing has never changed: the importance of understanding what you’re cleaning before you begin.
On April 4, 1970, I founded Alec’s Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning LLC. For more than six decades I’ve been helping homeowners care for their carpets, fine upholstery, Oriental rugs, and area rugs throughout Greater Boston, MetroWest, the South Shore, and Cape Cod.
My approach has stayed the same from the beginning:
Do the job carefully. Do it properly. Treat every home and every textile with respect.
I’ve never believed in a one-size-fits-all approach. A wool carpet should not be cleaned the same way as a synthetic carpet. A fine Oriental rug should not be treated like ordinary wall-to-wall carpeting. Upholstery fabrics vary widely in how they respond to moisture, cleaning agents, and stain removal. That’s why every job is evaluated individually so the safest and most effective method can be chosen for the material involved.
More Than 60 Years of Hands-On Experience
Over the years I’ve cleaned just about every type of residential textile found in Eastern Massachusetts homes — from everyday family-room carpeting and sofas to fine wool carpets, custom stair runners, delicate designer upholstery, and valuable Oriental rugs.
Experience has taught me that the most important part of this work isn’t always knowing how to clean something. It’s knowing when a different approach is needed — or when the best advice is not to clean it at all.
Our Rug Cleaning Plant in Abington
In 1979 I built our office and dedicated rug cleaning facility in Abington, Massachusetts, specifically so we could clean and dry area rugs properly under controlled conditions. That plant remains a central part of our business today.
Having our own facility allows us to provide pickup and professional in-plant cleaning for many types of rugs, including:

Some rugs can be cleaned successfully in the home. Others benefit from being washed, dried, and carefully groomed at the plant.

Carpet Cleaning
Wall-to-wall carpeting, wool carpeting, synthetic carpeting, custom stair runners, hallway and stair carpeting, and carpets affected by traffic-lane soil, spills, or pet-related issues.
Upholstery Cleaning
Sofas, sectionals, chairs, dining room cushions, ottomans, and a wide range of fabrics including cotton, linen, wool, velvet, chenille, microfiber, and delicate designer materials.
Area Rug Cleaning
Oriental, Persian, wool, antique, hand-knotted, needlepoint, and many other specialty area rugs.

Still Owner-Managed Today
I still manage the entire operation personally. I stay involved in day-to-day work, oversee quality, research better methods and products, keep up with new fibers and materials, and train our technicians to maintain the same high standards that have built our reputation over the years.
That ongoing involvement is important to me. It helps ensure that the care we give today is still consistent with the principles I started with in 1970.
