Specialized Cleaning for Oriental, Persian & Fine Area Rugs in Wellesley Homes

Oriental and custom area rugs drying at Alec’s Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning’s Abington facility, serving Wellesley, MA.
Many Wellesley homes contain beautiful area rugs that are an important part of the home’s interior. Hand-knotted Oriental rugs, Persian rugs, fine wool rugs, silk rugs, Aubussons, antique rugs, and custom designer pieces can represent a significant investment and deserve specialized care.
After more than 56 years in the carpet, upholstery, and area rug cleaning business, I understand that every rug is different.
I began cleaning carpets, upholstery, and rugs in 1962, and Alec’s Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning has been serving homeowners throughout Greater Boston since 1970.
Over the years, I have cleaned everything from valuable family heirlooms to hand-knotted Oriental and Persian rugs, antique rugs, and custom designer pieces. Before any rug is cleaned, I believe it should be evaluated individually.
Protecting Valuable Area Rugs
Many of the rugs I clean for Wellesley homeowners are not easily replaced. Some are family heirlooms that have been passed down through generations. Others are custom pieces selected by homeowners and interior designers for their quality, design, and craftsmanship.
Before cleaning any rug, I carefully consider:
- Fiber content
- Construction method
- Dye stability
- Age and overall condition
- Existing wear or damage
- Fringe condition
- Pet-related issues
- Previous cleaning history
This evaluation helps me determine the safest and most appropriate cleaning process for that particular rug.
One of the biggest misconceptions homeowners have is that a rug is clean simply because the surface looks clean.
In reality, much of the damaging soil can be hidden deep within the rug’s foundation. As people walk across the rug, tiny abrasive particles can gradually wear away at the fibers.
Professional cleaning can help remove this embedded soil while helping preserve the rug’s appearance, texture, and condition.
Why Many Fine Rugs Are Cleaned at Our Abington Plant
Many fine area rugs require more than surface cleaning.
Rather than cleaning them in the home, rugs that need a thorough washing process can be transported to our specialized rug cleaning facility in Abington, Massachusetts. There, they can be professionally cleaned, thoroughly rinsed, and dried under controlled conditions.
This allows me to give the entire rug—including the foundation and backing—the attention it may need.
Not every area rug should automatically be treated the same way. Some rugs can be effectively cleaned in the home, while others benefit from being taken to a professional rug-cleaning facility. The decision depends on the individual rug, including its construction, condition, amount of soil, and the cleaning process required.
For Wellesley homeowners, convenient pickup and delivery are available.
My Professional Area Rug Cleaning Process
1. Inspection and Evaluation
Every rug is carefully examined before cleaning begins. I look at the fiber type, construction, dyes, condition, and any areas of particular concern.
The goal is to understand the rug before deciding how it should be cleaned.
2. Thorough Dry Soil Removal
Embedded dry soil and abrasive grit can accumulate deep within a rug. Removing this material can be an important part of the cleaning process before washing.
For certain hand-knotted and Oriental rugs, specialized dusting may be appropriate when significant dry soil has become deeply embedded. However, not every rug automatically requires the same procedure.
I explain why some Oriental and hand-knotted rugs are dusted before washing in Why Hand-Knotted and Oriental Rugs Are Sometimes Dusted Before Washing.
3. Professional Washing
The cleaning method and solutions are selected based on the individual rug, including its fiber type, dye stability, construction, and overall condition.
Not every Oriental rug automatically needs a complete washing. Some rugs benefit from a thorough wash, while others may have conditions that make another cleaning method more appropriate.
I discuss this in Does Every Oriental Rug Really Need a Bath?.
The important point is that the rug should determine the cleaning method—not the other way around.
4. Thorough Rinsing and Controlled Drying
Proper rinsing and drying are extremely important.
Rugs are dried under controlled conditions to help minimize problems associated with excessive moisture, shrinkage, distortion, browning, or lingering odors.
An area rug is more than the surface fibers you see. Its foundation, backing, and construction can all affect how it reacts to moisture.
For example, some rugs can develop waving or buckling when different materials within the rug react differently to moisture during cleaning and drying. I explain this in more detail in Why Is My Area Rug Waving or Buckling After Cleaning?.
5. Final Grooming and Inspection
Before the rug is returned, it is carefully inspected and groomed to make sure everything looks right.
I want to make sure the cleaning process has been completed properly and that any areas of concern identified during the initial inspection have received appropriate attention.
Common Area Rugs I Clean for Wellesley Homeowners
Over the years, I have cleaned many different types of area rugs, including:
- Oriental rugs
- Persian rugs
- Wool area rugs
- Silk rugs
- Aubusson rugs
- Antique rugs
- Hand-knotted rugs
- Designer rugs
- Cotton rugs
- Custom-made area rugs
Whether your rug is a treasured family heirloom or a newer designer piece, I evaluate it individually before recommending the appropriate cleaning process.
Fine Wool, Silk & Other Natural-Fiber Rugs
Some of the finest area rugs contain natural fibers such as wool and silk.
These materials can be beautiful and extremely durable, but they can also require more careful consideration when it comes to cleaning chemistry, moisture, temperature, dyes, backing, and construction.
Knowing that a rug is made from wool or silk is important, but it doesn’t tell the entire story.
In my Ask Alec article, The Hidden Risks of Cleaning Wool, Silk and Other Natural Fiber Carpets, I explain why natural-fiber textiles require an approach based on the particular material rather than a one-size-fits-all procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions About Area Rug Cleaning
Do you clean Oriental and Persian rugs?
Yes. I have extensive experience cleaning Oriental rugs, Persian rugs, wool rugs, and many other specialty and fine area rugs.
Can antique rugs be cleaned safely?
In many cases, yes. However, every antique rug should be inspected individually. Its age, condition, fibers, dyes, and any previous repairs can all affect the safest cleaning approach.
How often should a fine rug be professionally cleaned?
It depends on traffic, pets, children, and household conditions. Many rugs benefit from professional cleaning every one to three years, although heavily used rugs may require attention sooner.
The condition and use of the individual rug are more important than simply following a fixed schedule.
Do you offer pickup and delivery in Wellesley?
Yes. Convenient pickup and delivery are available throughout Wellesley and surrounding communities.
