Specialized Cleaning for Oriental, Persian & Fine Area Rugs in Weston Homes

Professional cleaning of a fine area rug by Alec’s Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning LLC.
Fine area rugs are often among the most valuable furnishings in a home. Whether your rug is a hand-knotted Oriental rug, a Persian rug, a contemporary designer rug, or a treasured family heirloom, proper cleaning requires knowledge, experience, and careful attention to detail.
After more than 56 years in the carpet, upholstery, and area rug cleaning business, I understand that every rug is different.
I began cleaning carpets, upholstery, and area rugs in 1962, and Alec’s Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning has been serving homeowners throughout Greater Boston since 1970.
Over the years, I have cleaned everything from valuable family heirlooms to hand-knotted Oriental and Persian rugs, antique rugs, and custom designer pieces. Before any rug is cleaned, I believe it should be evaluated individually.
Your Rug Deserves More Than Surface Cleaning
Unlike wall-to-wall carpeting, fine area rugs should never be treated as though every rug is the same.
Different rugs are made from different fibers, including wool, silk, cotton, synthetic fibers, and specialty blends. Each can react differently to cleaning solutions, moisture, and handling.
Before cleaning begins, I carefully evaluate:
- Fiber type
- Dye stability
- Construction
- Fringe condition
- Previous repairs
- Areas of wear
- Spots and stains
- Pet-related issues
- Overall condition
This careful inspection helps me determine the safest and most effective cleaning process for each individual rug.
Not every Oriental or fine rug automatically needs the same type of cleaning. In my Ask Alec article, Does Every Oriental Rug Really Need a Bath?, I explain why the decision to wash a rug should be based on the individual rug rather than simply assuming that every rug should be cleaned the same way.
Why Many Fine Rugs Are Cleaned at Our Abington Plant
Many fine area rugs are best cleaned in our specialized rug cleaning facility rather than inside your home.
Cleaning rugs in our Abington plant allows for a more thorough and controlled process. Depending on the individual rug and its condition, this can include removing embedded dry soil, professional washing, thorough rinsing, controlled drying, and careful inspection throughout the cleaning process.
Some rugs simply aren’t good candidates for cleaning inside the home. There can be important differences in construction, fiber, dyes, condition, and how a rug needs to be handled during the cleaning and drying process. I explain more about this in my Ask Alec article, Why Can’t Every Area Rug Be Cleaned in the Home?.
This approach allows me to give the entire rug—including its fibers and foundation—the attention it may need.
For Weston homeowners, convenient pickup and delivery are available.
My Professional Area Rug Cleaning Process
1. Inspection and Evaluation
Every rug is carefully examined before cleaning begins. I consider the fiber type, construction, dyes, overall condition, and any areas of particular concern.
2. Dry Soil Removal
Fine soil and abrasive grit can accumulate deep within a rug. Removing this material is an important part of the cleaning process.
For some hand-knotted and Oriental rugs, removing embedded dry soil before washing can be an important part of the overall cleaning process. In Why Hand-Knotted and Oriental Rugs Are Sometimes Dusted Before Washing, I explain why this step can be important for certain rugs.
3. Professional Cleaning
The cleaning method is selected based on the individual rug, including its fibers, construction, dye stability, condition, and level of soiling.
4. Thorough Rinsing and Controlled Drying
Proper rinsing and drying are extremely important. Rugs are carefully handled throughout the process to help protect their fibers, colors, and structure.
Rugs can sometimes develop waving or buckling after cleaning, and there can be several reasons for this. I discuss this in more detail in Why Is My Area Rug Waving or Buckling After Cleaning?.
5. Final Inspection
Before a rug is returned, it is carefully inspected to make sure everything looks right.
Common Area Rugs I Clean
Over the years, I have cleaned many different types of area rugs, including:
- Oriental rugs
- Persian rugs
- Wool rugs
- Silk rugs
- Antique rugs
- Hand-knotted rugs
- Contemporary designer rugs
- Cotton rugs
- Specialty and custom-made rugs
Whether your rug is a treasured family heirloom or a newer designer piece, I evaluate it individually before recommending the appropriate cleaning process.
From Alec’s Experience: Don’t Wait Until Your Rug Looks Dirty
One of the biggest mistakes I see is homeowners waiting until their rug actually looks dirty before having it professionally cleaned.
Much of the damaging soil can be hidden deep within the foundation of the rug. Tiny abrasive particles can gradually work their way into the fibers, and every time someone walks across the rug, those particles can contribute to unnecessary wear.
Regular professional cleaning helps remove accumulated soil before it has an opportunity to cause additional damage.
I’ve always believed that preventive maintenance is far less expensive than replacing a valuable rug years before you should have to.
Convenient Pickup and Delivery for Weston Homeowners
I provide convenient pickup and delivery service throughout Weston, including Weston Center, Kendal Green, the South Side, the North Side, and surrounding neighborhoods.
