Ask Alec: Can You Get Furniture Dents Out of Carpets?

Heavy furniture can leave noticeable dents in carpeting, particularly when it sits in the same place for years. Many homeowners assume these dents are simply caused by carpet fibers being flattened. However, in my experience, the problem can be more complicated than that.

After 56 years in the carpet-cleaning business, I’ve learned that furniture dents can involve not only the carpet fibers but also the backing of the carpet and the padding underneath.

Why Does Furniture Leave Dents in Carpets?

The primary cause is the weight of an object being concentrated over a relatively small surface area. The greater the pressure exerted on that area, the greater the potential for the carpet’s construction to become permanently distorted.

Think of a 100-pound table supported by four small, 1-inch-diameter legs. Each leg supports 25 pounds. Now imagine that same table with four legs that are 4 inches in diameter. The weight hasn’t changed, but the larger contact area distributes that weight over a much greater surface, substantially reducing the pressure on the carpet.

This is why heavy furniture with small feet can leave particularly noticeable dents.

The Problem May Be in the Carpet Backing

Many people assume that furniture dents occur simply because the carpet fibers have been flattened. In many cases, however, the backing of the carpet may be the bigger problem.

When carpet is professionally cleaned, the fibers themselves will often recover much of their original appearance. But if the pressure from the furniture has permanently distorted the backing, cleaning alone may not eliminate the dent.

Think of a plastic drinking straw. If you bend it far enough, the material can stretch and deform. Even after you release it, the straw may never return completely to its original shape.

Some carpet backings contain synthetic materials that can deform under prolonged pressure. Latex coatings used in certain carpet constructions can also stretch or become distorted.

When this happens, the backing may no longer hold the carpet fibers in their original position. As a result, the dent can remain visible even after the carpet has been cleaned.

Don’t Overlook the Carpet Padding

The padding underneath the carpet also plays an important role.

There are many types of carpet padding. Some, including certain synthetic-fiber and jute-based constructions, can be relatively stable under pressure. Foam padding, on the other hand, varies considerably in density and in its ability to recover after being compressed.

When the padding has been permanently compressed, it can contribute to the depression you see on the carpet’s surface. This is one reason why the same piece of furniture can leave different results in different carpets.

A Technique I Have Used to Correct Certain Furniture Dents

When a furniture dent has affected the carpet backing, there may be another approach worth considering.

With an area rug, it is relatively easy to turn the rug over and inspect the backing. With wall-to-wall carpeting, access is much more difficult because the carpet is installed and secured in place.

When the backing is accessible, I look for a raised or bubbled area corresponding to the dent on the face of the carpet.

In certain cases, I have been able to push that distorted area back toward the carpet fibers and place a small cotton ball in the resulting space on the back of the carpet. The cotton ball can then be held in place with tape, such as duct tape, to provide support and help prevent the backing from settling back into its previous distorted position.

The objective is to support the affected area so that the dent on the face of the carpet can improve.

This is not a universal repair. The results depend on the construction of the carpet, the condition of the backing, and whether the padding has also been permanently compressed. Care must be taken not to damage the backing or interfere with the carpet’s installation.

Can Professional Carpet Cleaning Help?

Professional cleaning can improve the appearance of carpet fibers that have been compressed, but it cannot be expected to reverse every furniture dent. When the backing or padding has been permanently distorted, the results may be limited.

Have a Question About Your Carpet?

Furniture dents can sometimes be improved, but the results depend on the carpet construction, the condition of the backing, and the padding underneath.
