I’ve been professionally cleaning carpets since 1962 and started Alec’s Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning in 1970.

After more than 56 years in the business, I’ve learned that good carpet cleaning isn’t simply about removing dirt. It’s about understanding the carpet and knowing what is safest for it.
For homeowners in Hingham, that means careful, experienced carpet cleaning for everything from everyday family-room carpeting to fine wool carpeting, stair runners, and carpeting in larger and more formal homes.
Hingham’s coastal environment can also present some particular challenges. Sand, tracked-in soil, humidity, pollen, and everyday household use can gradually become embedded in carpeting.
Regular vacuuming is extremely important, but it cannot remove everything that settles deep into the carpet fibers.
For more on why vacuuming is about much more than simply making your carpet look clean, see Ask Alec: Is Vacuuming Really Just About Appearance?.
Carpet Cleaning for Hingham Homes
Carpeting can look reasonably clean on the surface while still holding a considerable amount of dry soil, grit, body oils, pet dander, and other everyday contamination.
Fine sand and grit are particularly important because they can act as abrasives. Every time someone walks across the carpet, those particles can work against the fibers and contribute to unnecessary wear.
Professional carpet cleaning can help remove much of that embedded soil while improving the appearance and freshness of the carpeting.
I commonly clean carpeting affected by:
- Traffic-lane soil
- Sand and tracked-in dirt
- Body oils
- Pet-related soil
- Food and beverage spills
- General household soil
- Spots and stains
- Dull or dingy appearance
Not Every Carpet Should Be Cleaned the Same Way
One of the most important things I’ve learned over more than five decades is that not every carpet should be cleaned the same way.
A fine wool carpet is different from a synthetic carpet. A custom stair runner can require a different approach from wall-to-wall carpeting in a family room.
Before cleaning begins, I carefully consider:
- Fiber type
- Carpet construction
- Dye stability
- Overall condition
- Level and type of soiling
- Traffic patterns
- Spots and stains
- Pet-related problems
- Previous cleaning history
- How much moisture the carpet can safely tolerate
The carpet itself helps determine the cleaning approach.
I don’t believe in treating every carpet the same simply because that’s the way a cleaning company has always done it.
How I Clean Carpets
The exact process depends on the carpet, but professional carpet cleaning generally involves several important steps.
Inspection and Evaluation
I begin by looking carefully at the carpet and identifying its fiber, construction, condition, traffic patterns, spots, stains, and any areas that may require special attention.
Dry Soil Removal
When appropriate, I remove as much dry soil and abrasive grit as possible before the cleaning process begins.
This is important because soil that remains deep within the carpet can interfere with cleaning and contribute to unnecessary wear.
Pre-Treatment
Traffic lanes, spots, spills, and heavily soiled areas may require appropriate pre-treatment before the main cleaning process.
Different types of soil respond to different cleaning solutions, which is where experience and an understanding of cleaning chemistry become important.
Professional Cleaning
The cleaning method is selected specifically for the carpet.
Some carpets can tolerate a more thorough wet cleaning, while others may require a carefully controlled lower-moisture approach.
The carpet determines the method—not the other way around.
Soil and Residue Removal
The suspended soil and cleaning residues are thoroughly removed so that the carpet is left as clean as possible without unnecessary residue that could attract new soil.
Controlled Drying
Proper drying is an important part of the process.
The goal is to leave the carpet appropriately dry and ready for normal use while avoiding problems associated with excessive moisture.
Carpet Types I Clean in Hingham Homes
I professionally clean a wide variety of residential carpeting, including:
- Wall-to-wall carpeting
- Wool carpeting
- Synthetic carpeting
- Bedroom carpeting
- Family-room carpeting
- Living-room carpeting
- Hallways
- Stair carpeting
- Custom stair runners
- High-traffic areas
- Carpeting affected by spots and spills
- Carpeting affected by pet-related soil
Fine wool carpeting and certain specialty installations can be more sensitive to overwetting, dye movement, browning, or texture changes than ordinary synthetic carpet.
That’s why I evaluate each carpet individually before deciding how it should be cleaned.

Carpet Cleaning for Hingham’s Coastal Homes
Living near Hingham Harbor and the surrounding coastal areas can be wonderful, but the environment can also bring additional soil into the home.
Sand can be particularly troublesome because small particles can become embedded deep in carpeting.
Hingham homes also experience seasonal humidity, pollen, moisture tracked indoors, and the everyday wear that comes with active households and entertaining.
These conditions don’t mean a carpet necessarily needs to be cleaned more aggressively.
They simply make regular maintenance and the right cleaning approach more important.
My Background in Cleaning Chemistry
My background in chemistry has been useful throughout my career.
Carpet cleaning isn’t simply about choosing the strongest cleaning solution.
Different fibers, dyes, soils, and residues can react differently to cleaning chemistry. Understanding those interactions helps me determine what should—and sometimes shouldn’t—be used on a particular carpet.
More aggressive isn’t necessarily better.
My goal is to remove as much soil as the carpet can safely tolerate while helping preserve its appearance and condition.
From Alec’s Experience: Don’t Wait Until Your Carpet Looks Dirty
One of the biggest misconceptions about carpet cleaning is that you should wait until the carpet looks dirty before having it professionally cleaned.
By the time visible soil appears, fine abrasive particles may already have been working their way into the carpet.
Regular vacuuming helps remove surface and loose soil, but it cannot remove everything that becomes embedded over time.
That’s why I believe professional cleaning should be part of preventive carpet maintenance, rather than something you wait to do only after the carpet looks dirty.
I’ve written more about this in Ask Alec: Why Waiting Until Your Carpet Looks Dirty Is a Costly Mistake.
I’ve also written about how regular vacuuming and professional cleaning work together in Ask Alec: Is Vacuuming Really Just About Appearance?.
The right cleaning schedule depends on the carpet, how heavily it is used, household conditions, and other factors.
Experience Also Means Knowing What Not to Do
After more than 56 years of cleaning carpets, I’ve learned that experience isn’t simply knowing how to clean something.
Sometimes it’s knowing what not to do.
I’ve seen carpets damaged by excessive moisture, improper cleaning solutions, aggressive cleaning methods, and treatments that weren’t appropriate for the particular fiber.
I’ve also seen carpeting that appeared worn simply because years of embedded soil had never been properly removed.
The goal isn’t to clean a carpet as aggressively as possible. The goal is to clean it properly.
If you’ve ever wondered whether professional cleaning itself can wear out carpet, I explain the difference between proper cleaning and the damage caused by abrasive soil in Ask Alec: Does Professional Carpet Cleaning Wear Out Carpet?.
Carpet Stains Require Individual Attention
One of the most common misconceptions about carpet cleaning is that every stain should disappear simply because the carpet has been professionally cleaned.
Unfortunately, that isn’t always possible.
Cleaning removes soil. It doesn’t necessarily remove color.
Some substances can permanently alter the dye or damage the carpet fiber.
Others respond very well to appropriate professional treatment.
The type of carpet matters, the substance matters, and any previous treatment of the stain can matter as well.
I explain why different stains require different approaches in Ask Alec: Why Does Every Carpet Stain Need a Different Treatment?.
I would rather give a homeowner an honest assessment of a stain than promise that every stain can be removed.
Optional Carpet Protection
After cleaning, some carpets may benefit from professional carpet protection.
A properly applied protector can help slow the absorption of spills and make routine spotting easier.
However, I don’t believe every carpet automatically needs protection.
The fiber, condition of the carpet, how it is used, and your particular needs should all be considered before deciding whether protection makes sense.
I believe in recommending what is appropriate for the carpet—not simply adding another service.
