Professional Cleaning for Outdoor Cushions, Patio Furniture & Performance Fabrics

Outdoor living spaces are an important part of many Concord homes. Patios, decks, porches, pool areas, and outdoor entertaining spaces often include upholstered cushions that spend months exposed to sun, rain, pollen and everyday use.
Over the course of a season, outdoor cushions can accumulate pollen, tree sap, leaves, bird droppings, sunscreen, food spills, body oils, mildew staining, and other outdoor contamination.
After more than 56 years in the carpet, upholstery, and specialty fabric cleaning business, I understand that outdoor fabrics require careful evaluation and the right cleaning method.
I began cleaning carpets and upholstery in 1962, and Alec’s Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning has been serving homeowners throughout Greater Boston since 1970.
For homeowners throughout Concord, West Concord, Concord Center, and surrounding areas, I provide professional outdoor cushion cleaning at our Abington plant, where the cleaning, rinsing and drying processes can be carefully controlled.
Why I Clean Outdoor Cushions in Our Plant
Outdoor cushions aren’t simply something I clean with a garden hose at your home.
Bringing them to our Abington facility allows me to inspect the fabric, determine the appropriate cleaning approach, thoroughly rinse the cushions, control the drying process, and inspect them again before they are returned.
Cleaning outdoor cushions at home can present several challenges:
- Weather can interfere with cleaning and drying
- Large numbers of cushions can be difficult to handle
- Cushions can be difficult to dry thoroughly
- Different fabrics may require different cleaning approaches
- Heavily soiled cushions may require more extensive cleaning and rinsing
By cleaning them at our facility, I have much greater control over the entire process.
I’ve also written about why outdoor cushions aren’t all alike in Ask Alec: Are All Outdoor Cushions Really the Same?.
Outdoor Cushions I Commonly Clean
I professionally clean many types of outdoor cushions and patio furnishings, including:
- Patio chair cushions
- Outdoor sofa and sectional cushions
- Chaise lounge cushions
- Poolside cushions
- Porch furniture cushions
- Dining chair cushions
- Bench cushions
- Custom outdoor cushions
- Sunbrella and other outdoor performance fabrics
Whether you have a few cushions or an entire outdoor furniture set, I can discuss the best way to handle them.
A Complete Seasonal Outdoor Cushion Cleaning Service
For many homeowners, one of the biggest advantages isn’t simply having the cushions professionally cleaned.
It’s not having to deal with everything afterward.
My complete seasonal service can include:
- Pickup of your outdoor cushions
- Transportation to our Abington plant
- Professional cleaning
- Thorough rinsing
- Controlled drying
- Final inspection
- Protective plastic wrapping
- Optional winter storage
- Delivery when you’re ready for the next outdoor season
This can be especially convenient when you have a large number of cushions or don’t have adequate space to store them during the winter.

What Can Build Up on Outdoor Cushions?
Outdoor cushions can accumulate much more than ordinary dirt.
Over time, I commonly see cushions affected by:
- Pollen
- Ground-in soil
- Food and beverage spills
- Tree sap
- Bird droppings
- Sunscreen and body oils
- Mildew staining
- Outdoor organic contamination
- General weathering and discoloration
Different contaminants can require different cleaning approaches.
That’s one reason I don’t believe there is one cleaning solution that should simply be applied to every outdoor cushion.
For example, mildew and organic growth can present their own challenges. I’ve written more about preventing and dealing with those problems in Ask Alec: Is an Ounce of Prevention Worth a Pound of Cure When It Comes to Outdoor Cushions?.
Every Outdoor Fabric Deserves Individual Attention

One of the most important things I’ve learned over the years is that you cannot always look at an outdoor cushion and know exactly what the fabric will tolerate.
Many outdoor cushions are made from performance fabrics such as Sunbrella and other solution-dyed materials, but outdoor furniture can also contain different fibers, fabrics, cushion constructions, and dyes.
Before cleaning, I consider:
- Fabric type
- Dye stability
- Cushion construction
- Overall condition
- Type of soiling
- Staining
- Previous cleaning attempts
- Areas requiring special attention
Testing and evaluating the fabric before proceeding is an important part of the process.
The fabric should help determine the cleaning method — not the other way around.
Thorough Cleaning, Rinsing & Controlled Drying
Outdoor cushions can hold a surprising amount of water.
That’s why proper drying is just as important as the cleaning itself.
After cleaning, the cushions are thoroughly rinsed and then carefully dried before they are wrapped or placed into storage.
Cleaning them at our Abington plant allows me to better control that process and make sure the cushions are properly dried before they leave the facility.
Once they are clean and dry, the cushions can be inspected and wrapped in protective plastic.
If requested, they can then be placed into winter storage until you’re ready for them the following season.
Professional Fabric Protection
After cleaning, some homeowners choose to have a professional fabric protector applied.
When appropriate, fabric protection can help outdoor fabrics resist spills and everyday soiling and make future maintenance easier.
However, I don’t believe every outdoor cushion automatically needs protection.
The fabric, how the cushions are used, and their overall condition should all be considered before deciding whether protection makes sense.
I only recommend protection when it is appropriate for the particular fabric and its use.
From Alec’s Experience: Be Careful With DIY Outdoor Cushion Cleaning
When outdoor cushions become dirty or develop mildew staining, it’s tempting to grab the garden hose, pressure washer, or bleach.
But outdoor cushions are still fabric, and cleaning them isn’t quite the same as cleaning a driveway, deck, or other hard outdoor surface.
A pressure washer can potentially damage or distort fabric. An overly strong cleaning solution can cause discoloration on fabrics that aren’t appropriate for it. And simply soaking a cushion doesn’t necessarily remove the contamination that has become embedded within the material.
I’ve written about this in more detail in Ask Alec: Before You Grab the Garden Hose, Pressure Washer or Bleach.
After more than 56 years in the cleaning business, I’ve learned that understanding what you’re cleaning is just as important as knowing what you’re cleaning it with.
