Professional Outdoor Cushion Cleaning for Hanover Homes

I’ve been professionally cleaning carpets, upholstery, rugs, and specialty fabrics since 1962, and I started Alec’s Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning in 1970.

After more than 60 years in the business, I’ve learned that outdoor cushions deserve the same careful attention as any other fabric in your home.

Outdoor cushions can take a tremendous amount of abuse. Sun, rain, humidity, pollen, tree sap, sunscreen, food and beverage spills, bird droppings, mildew, and everyday outdoor use can gradually leave cushions looking dirty, stained, faded, or weathered.

For homeowners in Hanover, I provide professional outdoor cushion cleaning at my Abington plant, where I can carefully control the cleaning, rinsing, drying, inspection, and preparation of your cushions.

The goal isn’t simply to make outdoor cushions look cleaner. It’s to clean them properly and make sure they are thoroughly dry before they are returned or placed into storage.

Outdoor Cushion Cleaning for Hanover Homes

Hanover homes often include patios, decks, porches, pool areas, outdoor kitchens, and other spaces where outdoor furniture becomes an important part of the home.

During the warmer months, cushions can receive considerable use from family and guests.

At the same time, outdoor fabrics are constantly exposed to weather and environmental contaminants.

I commonly see outdoor cushions affected by:

  • Dirt and general outdoor soil
  • Sand and fine grit
  • Pollen
  • Tree sap
  • Food and beverage spills
  • Bird droppings
  • Sunscreen and body oils
  • Mildew staining
  • Musty odors
  • Soil around seams and piping
  • General weathering and discoloration

Professional cleaning can remove much of this accumulated soil and contamination and help restore the appearance of cushions that are otherwise still in good condition.

Why I Clean Outdoor Cushions at My Abington Plant

I don’t clean outdoor cushions at your home with a garden hose or pressure washer.

I bring them to my Abington plant because it gives me much greater control over the entire process.

Cleaning cushions at home can present several problems. Weather can interfere with drying, cushions can hold a surprising amount of water, and heavily soiled cushions may require more extensive treatment than is practical on site.

At my plant, I can control the cleaning, rinsing, drying, inspection, and final preparation.

For outdoor cushions, proper drying is just as important as proper cleaning.

Outdoor Cushions I Commonly Clean

I professionally clean many types of outdoor cushions and patio furnishings, including:

  • Patio chair cushions
  • Outdoor sofa cushions
  • Sectional cushions
  • Chaise lounge cushions
  • Poolside cushions
  • Porch furniture cushions
  • Outdoor dining chair cushions
  • Bench cushions
  • Seat and back cushions
  • Custom outdoor cushions
  • Sunbrella and other outdoor performance fabrics

Whether you have a few cushions from a patio set or a large group of cushions for an outdoor seating area, I can discuss the best way to handle them.

Outdoor Umbrella Cleaning

Outdoor umbrellas can also accumulate substantial amounts of dirt and organic contamination.

Because they remain outdoors for extended periods, they can be exposed to pollen, dirt, bird droppings, tree sap, mildew, sunscreen, and other weather-related contamination.

I’ve cleaned umbrellas that were extremely dirty and required considerably more than ordinary household cleaning.

As with cushions, the fabric and condition of the umbrella need to be evaluated before deciding how it should be cleaned.

An outdoor umbrella is fabric—not a driveway or deck—and it shouldn’t automatically be treated like one.

Every Outdoor Fabric Deserves Individual Attention

One of the most important things I’ve learned over the years is that you can’t always look at an outdoor cushion and know exactly what the fabric will tolerate.

Many outdoor cushions are made with performance fabrics such as Sunbrella, but outdoor furniture can contain different fabrics, fibers, dyes, cushion constructions, and materials.

Before cleaning, I consider:

  • Fabric type
  • Dye stability
  • Cushion construction
  • Overall condition
  • Type of soiling
  • Staining
  • Previous cleaning attempts
  • Areas requiring special attention

The fabric determines the cleaning method—not the other way around.

How I Clean Outdoor Cushions

Every cushion is different, but my process generally includes several important steps.

1. Inspection and Evaluation

I examine the cushion fabric, construction, condition, staining, mildew, soil buildup, and any areas requiring special attention.

2. Fabric Testing

When appropriate, I test the fabric and dyes before cleaning.

This is particularly important when dealing with unusual materials, questionable dyes, previous cleaning attempts, or heavy staining.

A few minutes of testing can potentially prevent a much larger problem.

3. Selecting the Appropriate Cleaning Method

Different contaminants can require different cleaning approaches.

Mildew, sunscreen, tree sap, bird droppings, food spills, and ordinary dirt don’t necessarily respond to the same cleaning chemistry.

I select the cleaning approach based on the fabric and the contamination.

4. Professional Cleaning

The cushions are professionally cleaned using a process appropriate for the particular material and condition.

My goal is to remove as much soil and contamination as the fabric can safely tolerate.

5. Thorough Rinsing

Cleaning doesn’t end when the cleaning solution has done its job.

The cushions need to be thoroughly rinsed and extracted so that loosened soil, cleaning solution, and contaminants are removed.

6. Controlled Drying

This is one of the major advantages of cleaning at my plant.

Outdoor cushions can hold a surprising amount of water.

I want them thoroughly and properly dry before they are wrapped or returned to you.

7. Final Inspection

Once the cushions are clean and dry, I inspect them again before they leave my facility.

If you’ve requested storage, they can then be wrapped in protective plastic.

Mildew Isn’t the Only Problem Outdoor Cushions Can Have

Mildew is one of the most common reasons homeowners contact me about outdoor cushions.

But mildew isn’t necessarily the only problem.

Outdoor cushions can also accumulate sunscreen, body oils, tree sap, bird droppings, food and beverage spills, pollen, sand, and general outdoor soil.

These different contaminants can require different cleaning approaches.

There isn’t one magic cleaning solution that removes everything from an outdoor cushion.

I’ve written specifically about this in Ask Alec: Before You Grab the Garden Hose, Pressure Washer or Bleach.

That article explains why outdoor cushions shouldn’t automatically be treated with a pressure washer or bleach simply because they’re designed for outdoor use.

Be Careful With DIY Outdoor Cushion Cleaning

When outdoor cushions become dirty or develop mildew, it’s tempting to grab the garden hose, pressure washer, or bleach.

Sometimes homeowners can make improvements that way.

But there can also be problems.

A pressure washer that works perfectly well on a driveway can damage outdoor cushion fabric.

Bleach can also be useful in certain situations, but concentration, fabric compatibility, application, dwell time, and rinsing all matter.

More chemical isn’t necessarily better, and more pressure isn’t necessarily better.

After more than 60 years of working with textiles, one of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that you need to understand the material before deciding how aggressively to clean it.

Pickup, Delivery and Winter Storage

Outdoor cushions can take up a tremendous amount of space.

If your garage, basement, or storage area is already full, storing bulky cushions for several months can become a real inconvenience.

That’s why I also offer optional climate-controlled winter storage for cleaned cushions.

Your cushions can be cleaned, thoroughly dried, wrapped, and stored until you’re ready for them again.

When Should Hanover Outdoor Cushions Be Cleaned?

There are two particularly useful times to have outdoor cushions professionally cleaned.

Before the Outdoor Season

Some homeowners prefer to have their cushions cleaned in the spring so they’re fresh and ready when outdoor entertaining begins.

At the End of the Season

Others prefer end-of-season cleaning.

This has an important advantage: accumulated dirt, pollen, food spills, sunscreen, and other contaminants can be removed before the cushions go into storage.

Either approach can make sense.

The important thing is that the cushions are thoroughly clean and dry before they are stored.

Professional Fabric Protection

After cleaning, some outdoor fabrics may benefit from professional fabric protection.

A properly selected protector can help slow the absorption of spills and make routine spotting easier.

However, I don’t believe every outdoor cushion automatically needs protection.

The fabric, condition of the cushions, and how they are used should all be considered before deciding whether protection makes sense.

I recommend protection when I believe it is appropriate—not simply because it’s another service I can provide.
