Specialized Cleaning for Oriental, Persian & Fine Area Rugs
Oriental and area rugs professionally cleaned and drying at our dedicated rug cleaning facility in Abington.
Area rugs are often among the most beautiful and valuable furnishings in a home. Whether you have an Oriental rug, Persian rug, fine wool rug, antique heirloom, hand-knotted rug, needlepoint, or contemporary designer piece, proper cleaning requires more than simply removing the dirt you can see.
After more than 56 years in the carpet, upholstery, and area rug cleaning business, I understand that every rug is different and should be evaluated individually before cleaning begins.
I began cleaning carpets and upholstery in 1962, and Alec’s Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning has been serving homeowners throughout Greater Boston since 1970.
For homeowners throughout Wayland, including Wayland Center, Claypit Hill, the Training Field area, Glezen Lane, Pelham Island Road, and surrounding neighborhoods, I provide professional area rug cleaning with careful attention to the rug’s fibers, dyes, construction, age, condition, and cleaning history.
Why Professional Area Rug Cleaning Matters
A rug can look relatively clean on the surface while holding a surprising amount of dry soil, dust, grit, pet dander, and other household contaminants deep within its fibers and foundation.
Some of that soil is abrasive. Every time someone walks across the rug, those particles can work against the fibers and contribute to unnecessary wear.
Regular vacuuming is extremely important, but household vacuuming cannot always remove everything that becomes embedded deep within a rug.
Professional area rug cleaning can help:
- Remove deeply embedded dry soil and grit
- Improve the appearance of the rug
- Address many spots and stains
- Remove accumulated household soil
- Help preserve delicate fibers and dyes
- Reduce abrasive particles that contribute to wear
- Help extend the useful life of a quality rug
I believe professional cleaning should be part of regular rug maintenance — not something you wait to consider only after the rug looks dirty.
Every Rug Deserves Individual Attention
One of the most important things I’ve learned over the years is that not every rug should be cleaned the same way.
A hand-knotted wool Oriental rug is very different from a machine-made synthetic rug. An antique rug may require a completely different approach from a newer designer rug.
Before cleaning, I carefully consider:
- Fiber type
- Dye stability
- Construction
- Age and condition
- Level and type of soiling
- Fringe condition
- Previous cleaning history
- Areas of wear
- Pet contamination
- Stains and other problem areas
This evaluation helps me determine the safest and most appropriate cleaning approach for that particular rug.
The rug should help determine the cleaning process — not the other way around.
Why Some Area Rugs Are Better Cleaned at Our Abington Facility
Many fine area rugs benefit from being cleaned at our Abington rug cleaning facility rather than being cleaned in the home.
Cleaning rugs at our facility allows me to have much greater control over important parts of the process, including dry-soil removal, cleaning, rinsing, extraction, and drying.
I’ve written more about this in Area Rug Cleaning in Your Home or in Our Cleaning Plant?.
Where a rug should be cleaned depends on the particular rug, its construction, its condition, and the type of cleaning it requires.
Professional In-Plant Area Rug Cleaning
When your rug arrives at our Abington facility, the cleaning process begins with a careful inspection.
1. Careful Inspection
I inspect the rug for worn areas, fringe damage, cuts, tears, previous repairs, fiber distortion, moth damage, and other conditions that could affect the cleaning process.
If I discover something unexpected, I will discuss it with you before proceeding.
2. Thorough Dry-Soil Removal
One of the most important parts of rug cleaning takes place before water is introduced.
Area rugs can hold tremendous amounts of dry soil and grit deep within their fibers and foundation.
I remove as much dry soil as possible before the cleaning process begins. This helps produce a better cleaning and prevents dry soil from simply becoming mud when water is introduced.
I’ve explained this process in Why Hand-Knotted and Oriental Rugs Are Sometimes Dusted Before Washing.
3. Individual Stain Treatment
Not every stain should be treated the same way.
Different stains can require different treatments depending on what caused them, how long they have been present, and the fiber and dyes involved.
I evaluate problem areas individually and select the treatment that makes the most sense for that particular rug.
4. Professional Cleaning, Rinsing & Controlled Drying
After preparation, the rug is professionally cleaned using the method appropriate for its fibers, dyes, construction, and condition.
The rug is then thoroughly rinsed and carefully dried in our controlled drying area.
Proper drying is extremely important because improper or incomplete drying can contribute to problems such as odor, browning, shrinkage, distortion, and other damage.
I’ve written more about one of the problems homeowners sometimes notice after cleaning in Why Is My Area Rug Waving or Buckling After Cleaning?.
5. Final Inspection
Once the rug is completely dry, I inspect it again.
Any remaining areas that require attention can be addressed before the rug is carefully prepared for return to your home.
The goal isn’t simply to make the rug look cleaner. The goal is to clean it properly while respecting the rug itself.
Does Every Oriental Rug Need a Bath?
Not necessarily.
Many homeowners assume that an Oriental rug should automatically be completely washed whenever it needs professional cleaning. But the appropriate cleaning method depends on the individual rug.
Fiber, dyes, construction, age, condition, previous repairs, and previous cleaning history can all matter.
I’ve written about this in Ask Alec: Does Every Oriental Rug Really Need a Bath?.
After more than 56 years of cleaning fine rugs, I’ve learned that experience isn’t simply knowing how to clean a rug — it is also knowing when a particular cleaning method may not be appropriate.
Wool, Silk & Other Natural-Fiber Rugs Require Special Care
Wool, silk, cotton, and other natural fibers can behave very differently from many synthetic materials.
Their fibers, dyes, construction, texture, moisture sensitivity, and overall condition all need to be considered before cleaning.
I’ve discussed these concerns in The Hidden Risks of Cleaning Wool, Silk and Other Natural Fiber Carpets.
A fine natural-fiber rug deserves an approach based on what the rug actually is — not simply the category “area rug.”
Area Rugs I Commonly Clean
Over the years, I have professionally cleaned many different types of area rugs, including:
- Oriental rugs
- Persian rugs
- Wool rugs
- Antique rugs
- Hand-knotted rugs
- Needlepoint rugs
- Cotton rugs
- Designer rugs
- Custom area rugs
- Synthetic area rugs
- Other specialty rugs
Some rugs are relatively straightforward to clean, while others require considerably more careful consideration.
That’s why I don’t believe in putting every rug through the same process.
Experience That Protects Your Investment
Fine area rugs can represent a significant investment.
Some are purchased because they complement a home’s furnishings, while others have been passed down through generations and have tremendous sentimental value.
I’ve cleaned rugs that were simply part of everyday family life and others that homeowners considered irreplaceable.
One philosophy has guided the way I approach every rug:
“Look, observe the various conditions, think and think some more, then ask yourself, if this were my rug or my mother’s rug, how would I treat it?”
That’s still how I approach rug cleaning today.
I want to understand the rug first and then determine how I would want it treated if it belonged to me.
Convenient Pickup and Delivery for Wayland Homeowners
If your rug needs to be cleaned at our Abington facility, I can arrange convenient pickup and return service for Wayland homeowners.
Your rug can be picked up from your home, carefully transported to our facility, professionally cleaned, thoroughly dried, inspected, and returned when the cleaning process is complete.
This is particularly convenient for larger, heavier, valuable, or delicate rugs that homeowners may not want to transport themselves.
Don’t Wait Until Your Rug Looks Dirty
Many homeowners are surprised to learn how much dry soil a rug can hold before it actually looks dirty.
Fine particles can work their way deep into the foundation of a rug, where a normal household vacuum cannot always reach them.
Regular vacuuming is still one of the most important things you can do for your rug, but periodic professional cleaning helps remove accumulated soil that ordinary maintenance cannot.
I believe preventive maintenance is far less expensive than replacing a quality rug years before you should have to.
