Exceptional Carpet Care for Westwood Homes

For more than 56 years, Alec’s Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning has provided professional carpet cleaning to homeowners throughout Westwood and Greater Boston.
Since 1970, I have built my business around a simple principle: every carpet should be evaluated individually before it is cleaned.
Carpet is not just carpet. Wool, nylon, polyester, olefin, Berber, plush carpeting, textured styles, stair runners, and other carpeting can all react differently to moisture, cleaning solutions, agitation, and extraction.
That is why I do not believe in using exactly the same process on every carpet.
Whether you need one room cleaned, a staircase refreshed, several rooms throughout your home, or a complete carpet cleaning, I take the time to look at the carpet, identify areas that need special attention, and determine the appropriate cleaning method.
My goal is not simply to make the carpet look cleaner for a few days. It is to clean it carefully while helping protect the carpet and extend its useful life.
Carpet Cleaning for Westwood Homes
Westwood homes can have very different carpeting needs. Some homes have everyday family carpeting that sees heavy traffic, while others have fine carpeting, wool, formal rooms, or carpeted stairways that require a more careful approach.
Stair runners can be particularly challenging because they receive concentrated foot traffic and can show wear and soiling much faster than the carpet in a lightly used room.
High-traffic areas can also develop darker pathways and traffic lanes as dry soil becomes embedded in the carpet fibers.
Before cleaning, I look at the carpet as a whole rather than focusing only on the areas that are visibly dirty.
I consider:
- The type of fiber
- Carpet construction
- Age and condition
- Amount of wear
- Traffic patterns
- Spots and stains
- Previous cleaning
- Areas of discoloration
- Potentially delicate or damaged areas
- How much moisture the carpet can safely tolerate
This evaluation helps me choose a cleaning process appropriate for that particular carpet.
Every Carpet Deserves Individual Attention
One of the biggest differences between professional carpet cleaning and simply running a machine over the carpet is the evaluation that takes place before cleaning.
Two carpets can look almost identical and still require completely different cleaning methods.
Fiber type, construction, age, previous cleaning, installation, wear, and the type of soil present can all affect the way a carpet should be cleaned.
I inspect the carpet before I begin so I can identify conditions that may affect the cleaning result.
This is especially important when dealing with fine residential carpeting, wool carpeting, stair runners, older carpets, or carpets that have already been subjected to aggressive cleaning methods.
In my Ask Alec article Can Professional Carpet Cleaning Actually Damage Your Carpet?, I explain why professional carpet cleaning is not simply about equipment and extraction. The technician’s knowledge, chemistry, technique, and control of the cleaning process all matter.
Professional Carpet Cleaning and Carpet Longevity
Carpet fibers are constantly being exposed to soil.
Every time people walk across the carpet, they can track in fine particles of dirt, sand, dust, and grit. Some of this soil is removed by regular vacuuming, but some works down into the carpet.
Once abrasive soil becomes embedded in the carpet, normal foot traffic can force those particles against the fibers.
Over time, this can contribute to the worn appearance you often see in heavily traveled areas.
Professional carpet cleaning helps remove soil that ordinary vacuuming cannot remove.
The objective is not simply cosmetic. Removing accumulated soil can help improve the appearance of the carpet while helping protect the fibers from unnecessary wear.
That is one reason I recommend looking at carpet maintenance as an ongoing process rather than waiting until the carpet is heavily soiled.
Don’t Wait Until Your Carpet Looks Dirty
One of the easiest mistakes a homeowner can make is waiting until the carpet looks extremely dirty before scheduling professional cleaning.
By the time visible soil is obvious, there may already be a considerable amount of soil below the surface.
In Why Waiting Until Your Carpet Looks Dirty Is a Costly Mistake, I explain why waiting too long can make carpet cleaning more difficult and allow abrasive soil to remain in the carpet longer.
Regular maintenance can often make the cleaning process easier because the carpet has not been allowed to reach the point where soil is deeply embedded and traffic areas are heavily impacted.
Vacuuming Is More Important Than Many Homeowners Realize
Professional carpet cleaning is important, but so is what happens between professional cleanings.
Regular vacuuming is one of the most important things a homeowner can do to maintain carpet.
Vacuuming removes dry soil before it has the opportunity to work deeper into the carpet.
It can also help reduce the amount of abrasive material that remains in the fibers between professional cleanings.
As I explain in Is Vacuuming Really Just About Appearance?, vacuuming is about considerably more than making the carpet look neat.
The combination of good routine vacuuming and periodic professional cleaning is an important part of maintaining carpet over the long term.
Every Carpet Stain Is Different
Stain removal is another area where experience matters.
There is no single cleaning solution that safely removes every type of stain from every carpet.
Coffee, wine, grease, pet accidents, food, dyes, tracked-in soil, and other substances can behave very differently once they come into contact with carpet fibers.
Some stains can be removed relatively easily. Others may have chemically altered the carpet or affected the dye.
That is why I do not simply apply the same spot remover to every stain.
I first try to determine what caused the stain and how the carpet is likely to respond to treatment.
My page on Carpet Stain Removal explains why different stains require different approaches.
I also discuss this subject in Why Does Every Carpet Stain Need a Different Treatment?.
Wool, Berber, Plush and Synthetic Carpets
I clean a wide variety of residential carpeting in Westwood, including wool and synthetic fibers.
Different carpet types have different characteristics.
Wool Carpet
Wool is a natural fiber with its own cleaning considerations. It can be beautiful, durable, and comfortable, but it also requires someone who understands how natural fibers respond to moisture and cleaning chemistry.
Berber Carpet
Berber carpeting can have a distinctive construction that requires attention to the loops and overall condition of the carpet.
Plush and Textured Carpet
Plush and textured carpets can show traffic, shading, crushing, and other changes that need to be evaluated before cleaning.
Premium Synthetic Carpet
Many modern carpets are made from synthetic fibers and can be quite durable, but that does not mean every synthetic carpet should automatically be cleaned in exactly the same way.
The type of fiber is only one part of the evaluation.
Construction, age, wear, backing, previous cleaning, and the condition of the carpet all matter.
Stair Runners and Carpeted Staircases Need Special Attention
Stairs can be among the most heavily used carpeted areas in a home.
The concentrated foot traffic can create darkened areas, flattened fibers, and significant soil accumulation.
A staircase also has more edges, transitions, and difficult-to-reach areas than a large open room.
That means stair cleaning should not simply be treated as an afterthought.
I carefully inspect stair runners and carpeted stairs before beginning so I can determine what the carpet needs and what cleaning approach is appropriate.
The goal is to improve the appearance while taking care not to place unnecessary stress on the carpet.
What About Old or Difficult Carpet Stains?
Homeowners sometimes expect every stain to disappear simply because the carpet is being professionally cleaned.
Unfortunately, carpet cleaning and stain removal are not always the same thing.
Some stains can permanently alter a carpet’s dye. Others may have been present for many years, may have been treated with household products, or may have reacted with the fibers.
In those situations, the objective is to determine what can safely be improved without causing additional damage.
I would always rather give a homeowner an honest explanation of what I believe can realistically be accomplished than promise that every stain will disappear.
Can Professional Carpet Cleaning Wear Out Carpet?
This is a question I have heard many times over the years.
Professional carpet cleaning should be part of carpet maintenance, but the cleaning process itself needs to be appropriate for the carpet.
The equipment, cleaning chemistry, moisture level, agitation, extraction technique, and experience of the technician all matter.
I discuss this subject in Does Professional Carpet Cleaning Wear Out Carpet?.
There is a big difference between carefully cleaning a carpet and simply putting as much cleaning solution and water into it as possible.
Moisture Control and Proper Cleaning Technique Matter
One of the reasons experience matters in carpet cleaning is because more water does not automatically mean better cleaning.
The cleaning process has to be controlled.
Too much moisture, inappropriate chemistry, aggressive agitation, or improper extraction can create problems rather than solve them.
I evaluate the carpet before cleaning so the process can be matched to the material and its condition.
This is especially important when working with fine carpeting, wool, older installations, stair runners, or carpets with previous cleaning problems.
The objective is to achieve effective soil removal while keeping the cleaning process as controlled as possible.
Why Does Carpet Sometimes Get Dirty Again So Quickly?
A homeowner may have a carpet professionally cleaned and then notice that certain areas seem to become dirty again surprisingly fast.
There can be several reasons for this.
It may be related to heavily traveled areas, remaining soil, the carpet’s construction, household traffic, or the way previous cleaning was performed.
In some cases, what appears to be rapid resoiling may involve a residue or other condition that needs to be evaluated.
I discuss this in Why Does My Carpet Get Dirty Again So Quickly After It’s Cleaned?.
Understanding the reason is important because simply cleaning the carpet again without identifying the underlying issue may not solve the problem.
