Area rugs can add warmth, beauty, and character to a Newton home. They can also represent a considerable investment. A hand-knotted Oriental rug, Persian rug, fine wool rug, silk rug, antique, or designer piece may be more than something placed on the floor—it may be a family heirloom or something you expect to keep for many years.

After more than 56 years in the carpet, upholstery, and area rug cleaning business, I understand that every rug is different.

I began cleaning carpets, upholstery, and area rugs in 1962, and Alec’s Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning has been serving homeowners throughout Greater Boston since 1970.

For homeowners throughout Newton—including Newton Centre, Newtonville, West Newton, Newton Highlands, Chestnut Hill, Auburndale, and surrounding neighborhoods—I provide professional area rug cleaning based on the individual rug and what that particular rug requires.

Newton Homes and Fine Area Rugs

Newton has a wide variety of homes and interiors, from older properties with traditional furnishings to renovated homes with newer designer furniture.

The area rugs I encounter can be just as varied.

Some are everyday wool or synthetic rugs used in busy family rooms. Others are hand-knotted Oriental rugs, Persian rugs, silk rugs, antiques, custom pieces, or fine rugs that require considerably more care.

The value, construction, condition, and history of a rug—not simply how dirty it appears—should help determine how it is cleaned.

That is why I don’t believe in treating every area rug with the same predetermined cleaning method.

Your Area Rug Deserves Individual Attention

Unlike wall-to-wall carpeting, fine area rugs can differ greatly in their fibers, construction, dyes, foundation, age, and condition.

Before cleaning begins, I carefully evaluate:

  • Fiber type
  • Construction
  • Dye stability
  • Fringe condition
  • Foundation and backing
  • Previous repairs
  • Previous cleaning
  • Areas of wear
  • Spots and stains
  • Pet-related concerns
  • Overall condition

This evaluation helps me determine what the rug can safely tolerate and what cleaning approach makes the most sense for that particular rug.

Sometimes the answer is a thorough professional cleaning.

Sometimes a more controlled approach is appropriate.

And occasionally, what I find during the inspection can change my recommendation altogether.

Why Some Area Rugs Are Better Cleaned in a Specialized Facility

Not every area rug should be cleaned in the home.

Fine Oriental, Persian, wool, silk, hand-knotted, antique, and other specialty rugs may require more controlled handling than ordinary household carpeting. Some rugs may have unstable dyes, weakened foundations, previous repairs, delicate fibers, or other conditions that need to be identified before moisture and cleaning solutions are introduced.

Cleaning these rugs in our Abington facility allows us to inspect the rug carefully, remove dry soil, clean and rinse it thoroughly, and control the drying process from beginning to end.

For many fine rugs, that controlled environment is an important part of the cleaning process.

Why Fine Area Rugs Require Specialized Cleaning

A rug may look relatively clean on the surface while still containing fine dust, grit, and abrasive soil deep within the fibers and foundation.

Every time someone walks across the rug, those particles can rub against the fibers.

Over time, that can contribute to unnecessary wear.

Regular vacuuming is important, but household vacuuming cannot always remove everything that has worked its way deep into a rug.

Professional cleaning can help remove accumulated soil while giving the rug the individual attention it deserves.

Natural-Fiber Rugs Require Special Care

Wool, silk, cotton, and other natural fibers can respond differently to moisture, cleaning solutions, temperature, and drying conditions.

A rug made from wool is not automatically the same as another wool rug. Construction, dyes, backing, condition, and previous repairs can all affect how a rug should be handled.

I’ve written more about this in Ask Alec: The Hidden Risks of Cleaning Wool, Silk and Other Natural Fiber Carpets.

Natural fibers can be beautiful and durable, but natural does not mean indestructible.

Does Every Oriental Rug Need to Be Washed?

Not necessarily.

Some Oriental rugs benefit greatly from a complete washing. Others may have unstable dyes, weakened foundations, old repairs, delicate fibers, or other conditions that make another cleaning method more appropriate.

That’s why I don’t believe every Oriental rug should automatically be treated the same way.

I’ve written more about this in Ask Alec: Does Every Oriental Rug Really Need a Bath?.

The important point is that the rug itself should help determine the cleaning method.

Professional In-Plant Area Rug Cleaning

For many fine rugs, I prefer to perform the cleaning at our specialized rug-cleaning facility in Abington rather than inside the customer’s home.

The exact process depends on the individual rug, but may include:

Inspection and Evaluation

I carefully examine the rug before cleaning begins, looking at its fiber, dyes, construction, foundation, fringe, condition, previous repairs, previous cleaning, and any areas requiring special attention.

Dry Soil Removal

Fine grit and dry soil can become deeply embedded in a rug and its foundation.

Removing that material before washing is an important part of caring for many fine rugs. I’ve discussed this in Ask Alec: Why Hand-Knotted and Oriental Rugs Are Sometimes Dusted Before Washing.

Not every rug automatically requires this step. The amount of soil and the construction of the individual rug help determine what is appropriate.

Professional Cleaning

The cleaning method is selected specifically for the individual rug.

Fiber, construction, dyes, condition, previous repairs, and the type and amount of soiling all have to be considered.

A rug should not simply be placed into a predetermined cleaning procedure because it is labeled “Oriental,” “Persian,” or “wool.”

Thorough Rinsing

After cleaning, thorough rinsing is important to remove loosened soil and cleaning residues.

The rinsing process also needs to be appropriate for the particular rug and its construction.

Controlled Drying

Proper drying is extremely important when cleaning an area rug.

After cleaning and rinsing, the rug needs to be dried under controlled conditions appropriate for its construction and materials.

Improper or uncontrolled drying can contribute to problems such as distortion, shrinkage, dye migration, or buckling.

I’ve written more about this in Ask Alec: Why Is My Area Rug Waving or Buckling After Cleaning?.

The cleaning process isn’t complete until the rug has been properly dried and inspected.

Final Inspection

Before a rug is returned, it is carefully inspected to make sure the cleaning and drying process has been completed properly and that any areas of concern have been addressed as thoroughly as possible.

Area Rugs I Commonly Clean

Over the years, I have professionally cleaned many different types of area rugs, including:

  • Oriental rugs
  • Persian rugs
  • Wool area rugs
  • Silk rugs
  • Antique rugs
  • Hand-knotted rugs
  • Designer and custom area rugs
  • Cotton rugs
  • Synthetic and specialty rugs

Whether your rug is a treasured family heirloom or a newer designer piece, I believe it deserves individual attention.

From Alec’s Experience: Don’t Wait Until Your Rug Looks Dirty

Over the years, I’ve seen rugs arrive at our plant that appeared reasonably clean from above but released a surprising amount of fine grit and dry soil once the cleaning process began.

That hidden soil is one reason rugs can wear out faster than they should.

Regular vacuuming helps remove loose soil before it becomes deeply embedded, but vacuuming cannot always reach everything that has worked its way into the rug over time.

Periodic professional cleaning can help remove accumulated soil before it has an opportunity to contribute to unnecessary wear.

I’ve always believed that preventive maintenance is far less expensive than replacing a valuable rug years before you should have to.
