Outdoor cushions are an important part of many Newton homes and outdoor living spaces. Patios, garden terraces, pool areas, porches, and outdoor dining spaces can all include cushions that are exposed to weather, pollen, dust, tree sap, bird droppings, sunscreen, food spills, humidity, and everyday use.

Over time, these conditions can leave even high-quality outdoor cushions looking dirty, stained, or weathered.

After more than 56 years in the carpet, upholstery, and fabric cleaning business, I understand that different fabrics require different cleaning methods and care.

I began cleaning carpets and upholstery in 1962, and Alec’s Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning has been serving homeowners throughout Greater Boston since 1970.

For homeowners throughout Newton—including Newton Centre, Newtonville, West Newton, Newton Highlands, Chestnut Hill, Auburndale, and surrounding neighborhoods—I provide professional outdoor cushion cleaning in our Abington plant.

Rather than attempting to clean cushions outside at the home, plant cleaning gives me greater control over the cleaning, rinsing, drying, inspection, wrapping, and optional storage process.

Outdoor Cushions in Newton Face More Than Everyday Dirt

Outdoor cushions are constantly exposed to the environment.

Depending on where the furniture is located and how it is used, cushions may collect:

  • Pollen and outdoor dust
  • Ground-in soil
  • Tree sap
  • Bird droppings
  • Food and beverage spills
  • Sunscreen and body oils
  • Mildew staining
  • Organic outdoor contamination
  • Moisture and humidity
  • General weathering and discoloration

Newton homeowners may have outdoor cushions around swimming pools, patios, gardens, porches, terraces, and outdoor dining areas. Some cushions receive only seasonal use, while others remain outdoors for much of the year.

The amount and type of soiling can vary considerably from one cushion to another.

Every Outdoor Cushion Fabric Is Different

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that an outdoor cushion is an outdoor cushion, so they can all be cleaned the same way.

That’s not the case.

Outdoor cushions may be made from Sunbrella, Outdura, Olefin, acrylic, and other performance fabrics, and different fabrics can respond differently to cleaning solutions, moisture, agitation, and drying.

I test the fabric and evaluate each cushion individually before determining how it should be cleaned.

I consider the fabric, construction, condition, type of soiling, staining, and any areas that may require special attention.

A procedure that may be appropriate for one outdoor fabric may not be the right choice for another.

I’ve written more about this in Ask Alec: Are All Outdoor Cushions Really the Same?.

There is no one-size-fits-all cleaning process for quality outdoor cushions.

Why In-Plant Cleaning Matters for Outdoor Cushions

Cleaning outdoor cushions at a home can be limited by weather, available space, and the difficulty of thoroughly drying bulky cushions.

By bringing the cushions to our Abington plant, I can better control the process from beginning to end.

It also gives me the opportunity to inspect and test each fabric before deciding how it should be cleaned.

For heavily soiled cushions, controlled cleaning and drying can be particularly important.

Our Outdoor Cushion Cleaning Process

Every cushion is different, but the process generally includes:

1. Inspection and Fabric Testing

I examine the fabric, cushion construction, overall condition, level of soiling, visible stains, and areas that may require special attention.

Fabric testing helps me determine the most appropriate cleaning approach before the main cleaning process begins.

2. Fabric-Appropriate Cleaning

Outdoor cushions are cleaned according to the material, condition, and level of soiling.

The goal is to remove as much soil, staining, and outdoor contamination as practical while taking care not to use a cleaning method that is inappropriate for the particular fabric.

3. Thorough Rinsing

Outdoor cushions can contain pollen, sunscreen residue, organic contamination, mildew-related soiling, and other environmental material.

Thorough rinsing is an important part of the cleaning process because loosened soil and cleaning residues need to be removed from the fabric.

4. Controlled Drying

Proper drying is one of the advantages of cleaning outdoor cushions in our plant.

Cushions need to dry thoroughly and appropriately after cleaning, particularly when they have been heavily soiled or exposed to moisture over time.

5. Final Inspection

After cleaning and drying, I inspect the cushions again to make sure the cleaning process has been completed and any areas of concern have been addressed as thoroughly as practical.

6. Protective Wrapping

Clean, dry cushions can be wrapped in plastic to help keep them clean and protected until pickup, delivery, or optional winter storage.

Professional Fabric Protection for Outdoor Cushions

Outdoor fabrics are designed to withstand the elements, but their original protective finishes can wear over time through sunlight, weather, use, and repeated cleaning.

When appropriate for the particular fabric, I can also apply a professional fabric-protection treatment after cleaning.

Additional protection can help outdoor fabrics resist everyday spills and soiling and can make future maintenance easier.

I don’t automatically recommend protection for every cushion. It depends on the particular fabric, its condition, and how the cushions are used.

Outdoor Cushions and Furnishings I Commonly Clean

I professionally clean many types of outdoor cushions and upholstered furnishings, including:

  • Patio chair cushions
  • Outdoor sofa cushions
  • Outdoor sectional cushions
  • Dining chair cushions
  • Chaise lounge cushions
  • Poolside furniture cushions
  • Porch furniture cushions
  • Bench cushions
  • Custom-made outdoor cushions
  • Outdoor umbrellas

Whether you have a few cushions or a complete outdoor seating group, the same basic principle applies: the individual fabric and its condition should determine the cleaning approach.

From Alec’s Experience: Be Careful About DIY Outdoor Cushion Cleaning

When outdoor cushions become dirty or develop mildew staining, it can be tempting to grab a garden hose, pressure washer, or bleach and try to solve the problem yourself.

Sometimes that can create more problems than it solves.

Different outdoor fabrics and cushion constructions can react differently to cleaning products, excessive pressure, and moisture.

The goal isn’t simply to make the dirt disappear. The goal is to clean the fabric while protecting the material and making sure the cushions are properly rinsed and dried.

I’ve written more about this in Ask Alec: Before You Grab the Garden Hose, Pressure Washer or Bleach.

After more than 56 years of cleaning fabrics, I’ve learned that understanding what you’re cleaning is just as important as knowing what you’re cleaning it with.
