Professional In-Plant Cleaning, Pickup, Delivery & Optional Winter Storage for Outdoor Cushions

Outdoor cushions are an important part of many Sudbury homes and outdoor living spaces. Patios, decks, pool areas, porches, outdoor kitchens, and entertaining spaces can all depend on cushions that spend months exposed to weather and everyday use.
Pollen, leaves, dust, tree sap, bird droppings, sunscreen, food spills, body oils, mildew, moisture, and other outdoor contaminants can gradually build up in the fabric.
By the end of the season, cushions that once looked clean can become noticeably stained, dingy, or weathered.
After more than 56 years in the carpet, upholstery, and specialty fabric cleaning business, I understand that different fabrics require different cleaning methods and care.
I began cleaning carpets and upholstery in 1962, and Alec’s Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning has been serving homeowners throughout Greater Boston since 1970.
For homeowners throughout Sudbury, I provide professional outdoor cushion cleaning in our Abington plant. Cleaning the cushions in our facility allows me to evaluate the fabric, control the cleaning and rinsing process, thoroughly dry the cushions, inspect them again, and prepare them for pickup, delivery, or optional winter storage.
Outdoor Cushions Can Accumulate More Than You See
Outdoor cushions are exposed to far more than ordinary household dirt.
Depending on where they are used, I commonly see cushions affected by:
- Pollen
- Ground-in soil
- Leaves and plant debris
- Food and beverage spills
- Tree sap
- Bird droppings
- Sunscreen and body oils
- Mildew staining
- Outdoor organic contamination
- General weathering and discoloration
Some of this contamination is obvious.
Some of it is not.
A cushion can look reasonably clean from the surface while still containing fine soil, organic material, and other contaminants deeper within the fabric.
Every Outdoor Cushion Fabric Is Different
One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that an outdoor cushion is an outdoor cushion, so they can all be cleaned the same way.
That’s not the case.
Outdoor cushions can be made from Sunbrella and other performance fabrics, but fabrics can differ in their fibers, dyes, construction, condition, and previous exposure.
I test the fabric and evaluate each cushion individually before deciding how it should be cleaned.
I consider the material, construction, condition, type and amount of soiling, staining, and any areas requiring special attention.
A cleaning procedure that is appropriate for one outdoor fabric may not be appropriate for another.
I’ve written more about this in Ask Alec: Are All Outdoor Cushions Really the Same?.
There is no one-size-fits-all cleaning process for quality outdoor cushions.
Why I Clean Outdoor Cushions in Our Abington Plant
Outdoor cushions are not something I simply clean on the driveway or patio at a customer’s home.
Weather, available space, the number of cushions, and the difficulty of thoroughly drying bulky cushions can all make on-site cleaning impractical.
Bringing the cushions to our Abington plant gives me much greater control over the entire process.
I can:
- Inspect and test the fabric before cleaning
- Select the appropriate cleaning method
- Thoroughly clean and rinse the cushions
- Control the drying process
- Inspect the cushions again after drying
- Wrap clean, dry cushions for protection
- Arrange optional winter storage
For homeowners with a large collection of outdoor cushions, having the entire process handled in one place can also make seasonal maintenance much easier.
My Outdoor Cushion Cleaning Process
Every cushion is different, but the process generally includes several important steps.
1. Inspection and Fabric Testing
I examine the fabric, cushion construction, condition, level of soiling, visible stains, and areas that may require special attention.
Testing the fabric before proceeding helps determine the most appropriate cleaning approach.
2. Fabric-Appropriate Cleaning
The cleaning method is selected according to the particular fabric, its condition, and the type and amount of soiling.
The goal is to remove as much soil and outdoor contamination as practical while using a process appropriate for the material.
3. Thorough Rinsing
Outdoor cushions can contain pollen, sunscreen residue, organic contamination, soil, and other environmental material.
Thorough rinsing is an important part of the cleaning process because loosened soil and cleaning residues need to be removed.
4. Controlled Drying
Outdoor cushions can retain a surprising amount of moisture.
Proper drying is therefore just as important as the cleaning itself.
Cleaning the cushions in our Abington plant allows me to better control the drying process and make sure the cushions are thoroughly dry before they are wrapped or placed into storage.
5. Final Inspection
After cleaning and drying, I inspect the cushions again and look for any areas that may need additional attention.
6. Protective Wrapping
Once the cushions are clean and completely dry, they can be wrapped in protective plastic to help keep them clean until pickup, delivery, or optional winter storage.
Outdoor Cushions I Commonly Clean

I professionally clean many types of outdoor cushions and patio furnishings, including:
- Patio chair cushions
- Chaise lounge cushions
- Poolside cushions
- Outdoor sofa and sectional cushions
- Dining chair cushions
- Porch furniture cushions
- Bench cushions
- Seat and back cushions
- Custom outdoor cushions
- Sunbrella and other outdoor performance-fabric cushions
Whether you have a few cushions or an entire outdoor seating collection, I can evaluate the pieces and discuss the best way to handle them.
Professional Fabric Protection for Outdoor Cushions
Outdoor fabrics are designed for exterior use, but their original protective finishes can wear over time from sunlight, weather, use, and repeated cleaning.
When appropriate for the particular fabric, I can also apply a professional fabric-protection treatment after cleaning.
Additional protection can help outdoor fabrics resist everyday spills and soiling and can make future maintenance easier.
I don’t automatically recommend protection for every cushion.
The fabric, its condition, and how the cushions are used should all be considered before deciding whether protection makes sense.
A Complete Seasonal Service for Sudbury Homeowners
For many homeowners, the biggest advantage isn’t simply having the cushions cleaned.
It’s not having to deal with them afterward.
My complete seasonal service can include:
- Pickup of your outdoor cushions
- Transportation to our Abington plant
- Professional cleaning
- Thorough controlled drying
- Final inspection
- Protective plastic wrapping
- Optional winter storage
- Delivery when you’re ready for the next outdoor season
This can be particularly convenient when you have a large number of cushions or bulky outdoor furnishings that are difficult to transport and store yourself.

Why Seasonal Cushion Care Matters
Outdoor cushions don’t necessarily have to look badly soiled before they need attention.
Pollen, fine soil, sunscreen, body oils and other contaminants can gradually accumulate throughout the season.
Regular cleaning can help prevent that buildup from becoming more difficult to deal with later.

From Alec’s Experience: Be Careful With DIY Outdoor Cushion Cleaning
When outdoor cushions become dirty or develop mildew staining, it can be tempting to grab a garden hose, pressure washer, or bleach.
But outdoor cushions are still fabric.
They aren’t the same thing as a driveway, deck, or other hard outdoor surface.
Different outdoor fabrics and cushion constructions can react differently to cleaning products, excessive pressure, and too much moisture.
The goal isn’t simply to make the dirt disappear.
The fabric needs to be treated appropriately, the cushions need to be thoroughly rinsed, and they need to dry properly after cleaning.
I’ve written more about this in Ask Alec: Before You Grab the Garden Hose, Pressure Washer or Bleach.
After more than 56 years of cleaning fabrics, I’ve learned that understanding what you’re cleaning is just as important as knowing what you’re cleaning it with.
