I’ve been professionally cleaning carpets, upholstery, and area rugs since 1962 and started Alec’s Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning in 1970.

After more than 56 years in the business, I’ve learned that properly cleaning an area rug starts with understanding the rug itself.

For homeowners in Hingham, that means careful, experienced cleaning of Oriental rugs, Persian rugs, wool rugs, silk rugs, hand-knotted pieces, antique rugs, needlepoint, and custom designer area rugs.

Area Rug Cleaning for Hingham Homes

Living near the coast can bring some particular challenges for area rugs.

Sand, seasonal humidity, moisture tracked into the home, and everyday foot traffic can all contribute to the accumulation of soil inside a rug.

Fine sand and dry grit are especially important because they can act as abrasives. As people walk across the rug, those particles can work against the fibers and contribute to unnecessary wear.

Regular vacuuming is extremely important, but it cannot always remove the fine soil that settles deep within a rug’s foundation.

Professional cleaning can remove much of that embedded soil while helping preserve the rug’s fibers, dyes, structure, and appearance.

Not Every Rug Should Be Cleaned the Same Way

One of the most important things I’ve learned over more than five decades is that not every rug should be cleaned the same way.

A hand-knotted Oriental rug is very different from a contemporary wool rug. A silk rug is different from a synthetic rug. An antique or heirloom rug may require an entirely different approach from a newer designer piece.

Before cleaning begins, I carefully consider:

  • Fiber type
  • Dye stability
  • Construction
  • Age and condition
  • Fringe condition
  • Existing wear
  • Type and amount of soil
  • Pet contamination
  • Previous cleaning history
  • Previous repairs or restoration

This evaluation helps me determine the safest and most appropriate cleaning method for that particular rug.

The rug determines the cleaning method—not the other way around.

Professional In-Plant Area Rug Cleaning

Many fine area rugs are better suited to cleaning at our Abington facility rather than being cleaned in the home.

Cleaning a rug in our plant gives me much greater control over the cleaning, rinsing, drying, and inspection process.

Careful Inspection

I begin by examining the rug for wear, damage, previous repairs, fringe condition, dye stability, and other factors that could affect cleaning.

If I find a condition that could change my recommendation, I’ll discuss it with you before proceeding.

Thorough Dry-Soil Removal

A surprising amount of dirt in an area rug is dry soil.

Sand, grit, dust, and other abrasive particles can become deeply embedded within the rug.

Removing as much dry soil as possible before cleaning is an important part of the process.

For more information about why some hand-knotted and Oriental rugs may require special dry-soil removal before washing, see Ask Alec: Why Hand-Knotted and Oriental Rugs Are Sometimes Dusted Before Washing.

Treatment of Problem Areas

Spots, stains, pet contamination, and other problem areas are evaluated individually.

Different types of contamination can require different treatments, and not every stain will respond the same way.

Professional Cleaning

The cleaning method is selected based on the rug’s fiber, dyes, construction, condition, and level of soiling.

Some rugs can tolerate a thorough washing process, while others may require a more carefully controlled approach.

As I explain in Ask Alec: Does Every Oriental Rug Really Need a Bath?, not every Oriental rug automatically needs the same type of cleaning.

Thorough Rinsing

Proper rinsing is important because cleaning isn’t complete simply because the visible soil has been removed.

Cleaning solutions and suspended soil need to be thoroughly removed from the rug.

Controlled Drying

Proper drying is one of the most important parts of professional rug cleaning.

Improper drying can contribute to problems such as browning, odor, shrinkage, dye migration, or changes in the rug’s foundation.

Cleaning the rug at our facility allows me to control this part of the process much more carefully.

Rug construction can also affect how a rug responds to moisture. I explain this in Ask Alec: Why Is My Area Rug Waving or Buckling After Cleaning?.

Final Inspection

Once the rug is completely dry, I inspect it again before it is prepared for return.

My goal isn’t simply to make the rug look cleaner. My goal is to clean it properly while respecting the rug itself.

Rugs I Commonly Clean for Hingham Homes

Over the years, I’ve professionally cleaned many different types of area rugs, including:

  • Oriental rugs
  • Persian rugs
  • Wool rugs
  • Silk and silk-blend rugs
  • Hand-knotted rugs
  • Antique and heirloom rugs
  • Needlepoint rugs
  • Border rugs
  • Custom rugs
  • Contemporary designer rugs
  • Other specialty area rugs

Some rugs are relatively straightforward to clean.

Others require much more thought and care.

That’s why I don’t believe in putting every rug through the same cleaning process.

Fine Wool, Silk & Other Natural-Fiber Rugs

Wool, silk, and other natural fibers can require particularly careful consideration because they can react differently to cleaning chemistry, moisture, temperature, and other aspects of the cleaning process.

Knowing the fiber is important, but it is only part of the picture. Construction, dyes, backing, condition, and previous cleaning history can all affect how a rug should be cleaned.

I discuss some of these issues in Ask Alec: The Hidden Risks of Cleaning Wool, Silk and Other Natural Fiber Carpets.

Natural fibers can be beautiful and durable, but natural does not mean indestructible.

Why Fine Rugs Should Sometimes Be Cleaned at Our Abington Facility

Many homeowners understandably wonder whether their area rug can simply be cleaned in the home.

Sometimes it can.

Other times, particularly with fine, valuable, heavily soiled, or delicate rugs, I believe cleaning them at our Abington facility is the better choice.

At the plant, I can:

  • Remove embedded dry soil before washing
  • Control the cleaning process
  • Thoroughly rinse the rug
  • Control drying conditions
  • Pay closer attention to fringe
  • Inspect the rug before and after cleaning
  • Address problems that may not be practical to handle in the home

I’ve written more about this in Area Rug Cleaning in Your Home or in Our Cleaning Plant?.

The right answer depends on the rug.

From Alec’s Experience: Does Every Oriental Rug Really Need a Bath?

One of the questions I hear is whether every Oriental rug needs to be completely washed.

The answer is no—not necessarily.

A rug’s age, construction, dyes, condition, previous repairs, and the type of soiling it has accumulated can all affect whether a complete washing is appropriate.

I’ve written about this in Ask Alec:

Ask Alec: Does Every Oriental Rug Really Need a Bath?

After more than 56 years of cleaning rugs, I’ve learned that experience isn’t simply knowing how to clean a rug.

It’s knowing when a particular cleaning method isn’t appropriate.

Your rug can be picked up from your home, carefully transported to our facility, professionally cleaned, thoroughly dried, inspected, and returned when the process is complete.
