Outdoor Cushion Cleaning in Cohasset, MA

Professional Cleaning for Outdoor Cushions, Patio Furniture & Outdoor Fabrics

Outdoor cushions in Cohasset have a tough job.

They may spend months exposed to sun, humidity, pollen, tree debris, sand, sunscreen, food and beverage spills, bird droppings, and ordinary outdoor use.

Eventually, even good outdoor fabrics can begin to look dingy, stained, weathered, or simply tired.

I’ve been professionally cleaning carpets, upholstery, and outdoor cushions since 1962, and I started Alec’s Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning in 1970.

With 56+ years of experience working with fabrics, I’ve learned that outdoor cushions aren’t simply pieces of patio furniture. They’re fabrics that need to be cleaned according to what they’re made of and what they’ve been exposed to.

For homeowners in Cohasset, I clean outdoor cushions at my Abington facility, where I can control the cleaning, rinsing, drying, inspection, and preparation process.

Why I Don’t Clean Outdoor Cushions at the House

A garden hose may remove loose dirt.

A pressure washer may make a dirty cushion look dramatically better for a few minutes.

But neither one tells you what the fabric can safely tolerate.

That’s one reason I bring outdoor cushions to my Abington facility rather than cleaning them at the home.

At the plant, I can inspect the material, test it when necessary, choose the appropriate cleaning chemistry, thoroughly rinse the cushions, control the drying process, and inspect them again before they are returned.

With outdoor cushions, what happens after the cleaning is just as important as what happens during the cleaning.

Proper drying matters.

Outdoor cushions can hold a surprising amount of water, and cushions that aren’t properly dried can develop problems involving the fabric, foam, seams, backing, or odor.

What I Commonly See on Cohasset Outdoor Cushions

Cohasset outdoor furniture can be exposed to a combination of sun, moisture, pollen, coastal air, sand, and ordinary outdoor use.

Depending on the particular cushions, I may see:

  • Ground-in soil and sand
  • Pollen
  • Tree sap and debris
  • Bird droppings
  • Food and beverage spills
  • Sunscreen and body oils
  • Mold or mildew staining
  • General weathering and discoloration

These aren’t all the same type of contamination.

One cleaning solution doesn’t necessarily solve every outdoor-fabric problem.

Mold, mildew, and algae can also become a concern when outdoor cushions remain damp or are exposed to repeated moisture. I explain some of the issues involved in Ask Alec: Is an Ounce of Prevention Worth a Pound of Cure When It Comes to Outdoor Cushions?.

Sunbrella and Other Outdoor Performance Fabrics

Many outdoor cushions are made with Sunbrella® and other performance fabrics.

These fabrics are designed for demanding outdoor environments, but that doesn’t mean every cleaning method is appropriate for every cushion.

The particular fabric, construction, dyes, condition, previous cleaning, and type of contamination all matter.

I don’t assume that because something is labeled an outdoor fabric, it can be cleaned aggressively.

I evaluate the material first and then decide how I believe it should be handled.

That is one reason I wrote Ask Alec: Are All Outdoor Cushions Really the Same?.

Different outdoor fabrics can react differently to cleaning, and knowing what you are working with is an important part of the process.

Before You Reach for the Pressure Washer

When outdoor cushions become dirty, the natural reaction is often to reach for whatever seems powerful enough to remove the problem.

That’s understandable.

But outdoor cushion fabric isn’t a driveway or a deck.

I’ve written about this in Ask Alec: Before You Grab the Garden Hose, Pressure Washer or Bleach.

In that article, I explain why a garden hose may remove surface soil without properly cleaning embedded contamination, why pressure can damage fabric, and why bleach needs to be used carefully and only when appropriate for the material.

More pressure isn’t necessarily better. More bleach isn’t necessarily better.

Knowing what you’re cleaning is more important.

Fabric Testing Is an Important Part of the Process

One of the things I learned very early in my career is that you can’t always identify a fabric simply by looking at it.

That matters when you’re dealing with outdoor cushions.

Before cleaning, I may test the fabric and dyes to see how they react to the proposed cleaning method.

This is particularly important if I encounter an unusual material, questionable dye stability, previous cleaning damage, or a cushion that has already been treated with household chemicals.

A few minutes of testing can potentially prevent a much larger problem.

Cleaning and Rinsing Are Only Part of the Job

Once the appropriate cleaning method has been selected, the cushions are professionally cleaned according to the material and condition.

But cleaning doesn’t end when the soil has been loosened.

The cushions need to be thoroughly rinsed and extracted so that loosened soil, cleaning agents, and contaminants can be removed.

I want to clean the fabric—not leave the cleaning solution behind.

Controlled Drying

This is one of the biggest advantages of cleaning outdoor cushions at my Abington facility.

After cleaning and rinsing, the cushions need to dry properly.

They can hold a surprising amount of water, particularly when foam and multiple layers of material are involved.

I want the cushions thoroughly dry before they are wrapped or returned to you.

That is particularly important if you’re planning to put the cushions into storage.

Outdoor umbrellas can suffer from many of the same problems as cushions.

They can collect pollen, bird droppings, tree sap, sunscreen, mildew, and general outdoor soil.

I’ve cleaned umbrellas that were extremely dirty and required considerably more than simple surface cleaning.

The fabric and condition of the umbrella need to be evaluated before deciding how it should be cleaned.

An outdoor umbrella is fabric, too.

When Should Cohasset Outdoor Cushions Be Cleaned?

There isn’t one perfect time for every homeowner.

Some people prefer to have their cushions professionally cleaned before the outdoor season, so everything is fresh and ready for use.

Others prefer end-of-season cleaning, removing accumulated soil and contaminants before the cushions are put away.

For cushions that are going into storage, I consider end-of-season cleaning especially useful because you’re not storing several months’ worth of accumulated outdoor soil along with them.

Clean and dry before storage is the goal.

Pickup, Delivery and Winter Storage

Professionally cleaned outdoor furniture cushions, individually wrapped and organized in climate-controlled storage by Alec’s Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning LLC, ready for seasonal protection.

I provide professional cleaning and secure, climate-controlled storage for your outdoor cushions, helping keep them protected and ready for your patio when you need them.

I can arrange pickup of your outdoor cushions in Cohasset and transport them to my Abington facility.

After cleaning and controlled drying, I can arrange delivery back to your home.

I also offer optional climate-controlled winter storage.

That’s useful for homeowners who don’t want a garage, basement, or other storage area filled with bulky cushions for several months.

The process can be:

Pickup → cleaning → rinsing → controlled drying → inspection → protective wrapping → storage or delivery

Fabric Protection

Some outdoor fabrics may benefit from professional fabric protection after cleaning.

Protection can help slow the absorption of spills and everyday soiling and can make routine cleanup easier.

But I don’t believe every cushion automatically needs protection.

The fabric, condition, how the cushions are used, and your preferences should all be considered.

I recommend protection when I think it makes sense for the particular cushions—not simply because it’s another service I provide.
