Professional In-Plant Cleaning, Pickup, Delivery & Optional Winter Storage for Outdoor Cushions

Outdoor cushions can take a surprising amount of abuse during the spring, summer, and fall.
They sit outside in the sun and rain. They collect pollen, dust, leaves, dirt, food and beverage spills, body oils, and other everyday outdoor contamination.
By the end of the season, they may not look particularly dirty—but they can hold considerably more soil than you can see.
I’ve been professionally cleaning carpets, upholstery, and specialty fabrics for 56+ years, and I started Alec’s Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning in 1970.
I’ve learned that outdoor cushions need to be treated as fabrics—not simply as outdoor furniture.
Outdoor Cushion Cleaning for Westwood Homes
Outdoor furniture can become an important part of a Westwood home’s living space once the weather warms up.
Patios, decks, porches, and outdoor seating areas provide places for relaxing, dining, and entertaining family and friends.
Outdoor cushions, however, spend much of their time exposed to the elements.
Sun, rain, humidity, pollen, airborne dirt, leaves, and everyday use can gradually affect the fabric.
Over time, cushions can also collect food and beverage spills, body oils, pet-related soil, and other contaminants.
A cushion can still look reasonably good while holding a considerable amount of embedded contamination.
That’s why I believe outdoor cushions deserve the same thoughtful evaluation as indoor upholstery.
Every Outdoor Cushion Fabric Is Different
Outdoor cushions are made from a variety of fabrics and materials.
Some are designed specifically for outdoor use, while others may have more delicate stitching, piping, or construction.
Even durable outdoor fabrics can become stained or discolored over time.
The actual fabric, dyes, construction, condition, previous treatments, and type of contamination all matter.
Outdoor fabric is durable. That doesn’t make it indestructible.
I evaluate the material before deciding how it should be cleaned.
When Is the Best Time to Clean Outdoor Cushions?
There are two times that can make sense.
Some Westwood homeowners prefer to have their cushions cleaned in the spring, before putting their outdoor furniture back into regular use.
Others prefer end-of-season cleaning, so the cushions are clean and thoroughly dry before they are stored for the winter.
There isn’t one answer that applies to everyone.
The important thing is that the cushions are properly cleaned and thoroughly dry before they are put away for an extended period.
Cleaning at the end of the season can also mean that months of accumulated soil aren’t sitting in the fabric while the cushions are stored.
Before You Reach for the Pressure Washer
A dirty outdoor cushion can make a pressure washer look tempting.
It certainly has enough power to remove surface dirt.
But fabric doesn’t respond to pressure the same way a driveway or deck does.
I’ve written about this in Ask Alec: Before You Grab the Garden Hose, Pressure Washer or Bleach.
In that article, I explain why surface cleaning isn’t necessarily the same thing as removing embedded contamination, why excessive pressure can create problems, and why bleach needs to be used carefully and only when appropriate for the material.
More pressure isn’t necessarily better cleaning.
What I Look for Before Cleaning
Before cleaning a set of cushions, I consider:
- Fabric type
- Dye stability
- Construction
- Overall condition
- Type of contamination
- Staining
- Previous cleaning attempts
- Areas needing special attention
When appropriate, I test the fabric and dyes before beginning.
A few minutes of evaluation can prevent a much larger problem.
How I Clean Outdoor Cushions
The exact process depends on the cushions.
Inspection
I examine the fabric, construction, condition, staining, and overall soil level.
Dry Soil Removal
Loose dirt, pollen, and other dry particles are removed when appropriate.
Problem Areas
Food and beverage spills, body oils, mildew staining, leaves, and other contaminants may require different treatments.
Professional Cleaning
I select the cleaning process according to the particular fabric and condition.
Thorough Rinsing
Loosened soil and cleaning agents need to be removed from the material.
Controlled Drying
The cushions are dried thoroughly under conditions I can control at my Abington facility.
Final Inspection
Once they’re completely dry, I inspect them again before they’re wrapped or prepared for delivery.
The ability to control the drying process is one of the biggest advantages of plant cleaning.
Why I Clean Westwood Outdoor Cushions at My Abington Plant
Outdoor cushions can be difficult to clean properly at home.
There may not be an appropriate place to clean them, and weather can make proper drying difficult.
Cushions can also hold considerably more moisture than they appear to.
At my Abington facility, I can control the process from beginning to end.
I can inspect the fabric, test it when appropriate, select the cleaning method, treat individual problem areas, thoroughly rinse the cushions, control the drying process, and inspect them again before they leave.
Good outdoor-fabric cleaning involves more than removing visible dirt. It involves controlling the entire process.
What Can Build Up on Outdoor Cushions?
Outdoor cushions can collect a wide variety of contamination.
That may include:
- Dirt
- Dust
- Pollen
- Leaves and tree debris
- Food and beverage spills
- Body oils
- Pet-related soil
- Mildew staining
- General outdoor soil
The type of contamination matters.
Food and beverage spills are different from ordinary dirt.
Body oils are different from pollen.
Mildew staining is different from surface soil.
There isn’t one cleaning solution that fixes everything.
Outdoor Umbrella Cleaning
Outdoor umbrellas can experience many of the same conditions as cushions.
They can collect pollen, dirt, tree debris, bird droppings, mildew staining, sunscreen, and other outdoor contamination.
Your outdoor furniture doesn’t have to include only cushions for professional cleaning to make sense.
Umbrellas are fabric too.

Winter Storage for Westwood Outdoor Cushions
Outdoor cushions can take up a surprising amount of room.
A large patio set or outdoor sectional can quickly fill a garage, basement, or other storage area.
That’s why I offer optional climate-controlled winter storage.
The cushions can be professionally cleaned, thoroughly dried, wrapped in protective plastic, and stored until you’re ready for them again.

Clean, dry, protected, and out of the way for the winter.
When the next outdoor season arrives, I can arrange delivery back to your Westwood home.
Fabric Protection for Outdoor Cushions
Some outdoor fabrics may benefit from professional fabric protection after cleaning.
Protection can help slow the absorption of spills and make routine maintenance easier.
But I don’t automatically recommend it for every set of cushions.
The fabric, condition, and how the cushions are used all matter.
I recommend protection when I believe it makes sense for the particular cushions—not simply because it’s another service I can provide.
Why Professional Outdoor Cushion Cleaning Matters
Outdoor cushions are exposed to much more than ordinary household soil.
They spend months exposed to weather, pollen, dirt, moisture, and other outdoor contaminants.
Regular care can help keep them looking better and can help prevent accumulated soil from becoming a bigger cleaning problem.
Waiting until outdoor cushions look extremely dirty isn’t necessarily the best approach.
Cleaning them before storage or before the outdoor season begins can be a practical part of maintaining them.
